Team Ripped Conquers Spartan Race

On August 27, 2016 members from Ripped Performance conquered the Washington DC Spartan Sprint in Mechansville, Maryland. This was the first race for three of our members and a repeat for two. They all helped and encouraged each other throughout the course. The Spartan Race is designed to test your limits and push you past your comfort zone and it did just that. The length was 4.75 miles with 24 obstacles – many of them focusing on upper-body strength.  This year there were less walls to scramble but more obstacles like the monkey bars, the rope climb (with no knots this time around) and the rig that features rings, a baseball, and a horizontal bar. We also have a member working towards her Trifecta and this was her second race – next up – The Beast!

Congrats to all of our members who received their medal. Once a Spartan, always a Spartan. Aroo!

Spartan Race 2016

Spartan Race

Obstacle Course Racing, Spartan Race, Battlefrog, OCR TrainingTwo years ago, Cliff challenged Ripped members to join his team to tackle the challenging Spartan Race. Without knowing exactly how hard the race would be, members signed up to push themselves and accomplish this amazing task. We loved it so much, we did it again in 2015 and will be tackling it again this coming August.

The Spartan Race is the leading Obstacle Race company and holds races of varying lengths throughout the world. The race we will be signing up for is the Spartan Sprint – the shortest race. The race length is anywhere from 3-5 miles and will include up to 20 different obstacles. This year, the race will be happening the weekend of August 27th and Ripped Performance will be signing up for Saturday morning. Other race distances are the Super and the Beast. If you have questions about these, try and search out Ripped member Dennis. He has tackled the Trifecta (when you race all 3 lengths in one calendar year).

Many look at the Spartan Race and immediately think they can’t do it. We are here to say that you can! Is it hard? Yes. Is it challenging? Yes. Can you do it? Yes. During the summer we have Spartan-specific workouts that will help you gain the necessary stamina and strength to get you through the race. Not to fear, everyone helps everyone along the course. Need a lift over the wall? No problem. Need a helping hand up the mud hill? It will be there. When you are done you will feel tired, sore, and amazing!

Where to sign up? http://www.spartan.com/en/race/detail/1146/overview If you’re planning to sign-up to race with the team, please select Saturday and select Saturday morning start time. Teams have to all be in the same block and the longer you wait, the more likely you are to have to run in the afternoon. Also, when you sign up, please select Ripped Performance as your team. Currently, Jennifer is the team captain having already signed up. Friends and family members are welcome to sign up and join the team as well. It is always a good idea to have someone to race with as well. It is ok if you can’t keep up with other members of the team – the race is about you – you facing your fears, your struggles, and rising above them.

We will have more information on race-specific workouts. Once you sign up, please let us know so we can add you to the Spartan list. We’re looking forward to taking a big team this summer and showing everyone how Ripped Members ‘Rise Above Average’!

Ripped Performance Tackles the Spartan Race

The 2015 Washington DC Spartan Sprint and Virginia Super have been done and completed. We are very proud of our Ripped Performance members who accomplished both. For the Sprint team we had Ripped members: Dennis, Jennifer, Robert, Brendan, and Coach Cliff. Two additional friends – Derek and Dougg – joined the team. For the Super, Dennis, Jamal, and Rob competed.

This year’s Sprint was much more challenging than last year’s Some of us felt more prepared but they changed the course and added very steep hills. At times, Ripped members had to bear crawl up them and scoot down on their butts. They also added more obstacles – 23 compared to last year’s 18. We do need to give a special shout-out to Brendan who, at 15, completed the course and promptly asked, “When’s the Super?” Robert, Dennis, an Dougg finished a Spartan race for the first time as well.

Coach Cliff accompanied Dennis, Jamal, and Rob to the Virginia Super. Many claim this is the hardest Spartan race in the series with the length of about 8-9 miles up and down the side of Wintergreen resort. Cliff was there to cheer them on and, in the video on Facebook, coach them along the way.

Bootcamp was essential to training our Spartans. During bootcamp we work on exercises that strengthen the core, legs, and upper-body. The body-weight exercises are especially essential for obstacles like the barb wire crawl, wall climb, rope climb, and others where you have to lift yourself. We also design exercises to help with the Farmers Walk, sandbag carry, and bucket brigade. Our Ripped member, Jennifer feels that bootcamp truly helps prepare her for the Spartan race. She says, “I would not have been as confident on the course this year without the Ripped bootcamps. Mary Beth pushed us hard on Saturdays and that resulted in a much easier time with the obstacles.”

Even if you don’t plan to participate in an OCR (Spartan Race, Tough Mudder, Battle Frog, etc.) our bootcamps will help you with getting more fit and healthy. Whether it is carrying groceries from the store to the car, lifting your children, running a 5k, or just simply living life – Ripped Performance can help you. We welcome beginners on up to fitness fanatics. Bootcamp is set up so that you can go at your own pace. Join us for a session!
